2 years Skills to Compete BTEI Part-time


The general aim of these Skills to Compete courses is to  provide students with a proficient practical knowledge and understanding of horticulture practice at a supervisory level:

This is a new course created to embrace the current societal trends and environmental obligations that relate to the running of a green open space, encouraging collaboration, education in a sustainable manner.

Learners will complete a total of 220 hours of work placement in the specific area of Garden and Parks Supervisory, once the module’s outcomes have been achieved.

Entry Requirements          

  • Leaving Cert/Leaving Cert Applied or its equivalent or progression from the level 5 programmes. 
  • For mature students, work experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

Work Placement/Gardening Projects

Practical experience is an integral part of the course. The College has established the following practices to enhance learners’ exposure to horticulture:

  • Garden maintenance in public parks, private gardens and college grounds
  • Exciting learning through practical science experiments
  • Regular experience growing vegetables in college Allotment
  • College trips to include Botanic Gardens, Hook Head, Nurseries, Parks etc
  • Community support: Designing and helping to build a garden for St Michael’s House,
  • Maintaining the gardens of Simpson’s Nursing Home and helping with the Airfield
